The year is 1993. The Pittsburgh Fire Department is fighting a major blaze. Firefighter Darren Francis Thomas McCord and two other firefighters go into the burning house, where Darren finds a trapped little girl. Darren and the girl become pinned by debris. Darren yells for help, but by the time two more firefighters show up to help, the girl is dead, and Darren is devastated. Two years later, Darren has since resigned from the fire department. Darren is now a fire inspector. Darren’s devastation over the girl’s death 2 years ago not only led to his resignation from the local fire department, but also led to his divorce from his wife Kathi, with whom he has two kids named Tyler and Emily. Darren heads to Kathi’s house to pick up Tyler and Emily so he can take them to an ice hockey game. It’s game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, the 7 game series that decides which team is the annual National Hockey League (NHL) champion. The game is set to take place in Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena, the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who will be playing against the Chicago Blackhawks. By the time Darren and the kids get to the game, the opening face off is about 90 minutes away. Darren introduces the kids to his friend Joan and has Joan take Emily to meet »Icey«, the Penguins’ mascot, while Darren takes Tyler to the Penguins locker room where Tyier meets some of the players. Darren then introduces the kids to Andrew Ferrara, the arena’s head chef. By the time Darren and the kids get to their seats, it’s 20 minutes until the opening face off, and United States Vice President Daniel Bender has arrived to see the game from the owner’s box. Andrew is unaware that his wife is being held hostage at home. The man forces her to dial Andrew’s work number at the arena, and when Andrew answers the phone, he is told that if he gives any indication that anything is wrong, Mrs. Ferrara will die. Andrew is then told that when he takes food to the owner’s box, he will take two new assistants with him, escorted by two security guards. All Andrew has to do is get to the box. The two new assistants show up, and one of them is a man named Joshua Foss, who used to work for the US government. As the national anthem is being performed, Andrew and Joshua arrive in the box that Bender is in, and at Andrew’s home, Mrs. Ferrara is shot dead. Joshua then takes the owner’s box hostage, and shoots Andrew dead. Bender is one of the hostages. Darren tells Emily and Tyler to stay in their seats while Darren does some inspection work. Joshua shows Daniel a piece of paper that has on it 13 account numbers from 5 U.S. banks. These accounts belong to three different countries, and these accounts were frozen by the United States government. These accounts represent a total of $1,700,000,000. Joshua makes it clear that over the course of the game, all of that money will be transferred to banks of his choice. At least one third of the money is to be moved in each of the game’s three periods. A hostage will die at the end of each period if the money is not moved as Joshua has stated. If the transfers haven’t been completed by the end of the game, Joshua will kill everyone in the arena by detonating every bomb his henchmen have planted in the arena. The secret service, led by Matthew Hallmark, is notified of the situation. Tyler annoys Emily to the point to where Emily leaves her seat to get away from Tyler. That’s a huge mistake, because Emily heads to a restroom – where she discovers Joan’s dead body and is kidnapped by Carla, a mercenary who works for Joshua. Carla takes Emily to Joshua. When Darren discovers that Emily is missing, Darren begins a frantic search. It’s up to Darren to disarm all of the bombs and rescue Emily. And he’s not about to let anything stop him.
